Holidays are the perfect opportunity to sit back and relax without a care in the world. If you have an accident onboard or fall ill, you may not know what to do. Take a look below at our guide to what to do if you have an accident onboard a ship.

Minor accidents

The majority of ships should have members of staff onboard who can help with minor injuries and provide first aid. If necessary, they should also be able to provide medication if needed.

Severe accidents

If a more severe incident occurs which cannot be fixed with a bandage or plaster you’ll most likely have to take a trip to the onboard medical centre. There will be a trained doctor or nurse there who can provide help 24/7.

If the case is extreme, passengers may need to be evacuated from the ship to receive appropriate care. This is most likely to happen at the nearest port where you will be transported to the nearest hospital.

Medical costs

In some cases, a fee may be charged for the medical services. The cost is likely to be higher for severe and extreme accidents. You can usually claim the cost of these medical fees back on your travel insurance, however you must check with your provider first.
