The first ship to be launched by Virgin Voyages, the new cruise line founded by entrepreneur Richard Branson has been revealed to be an adult-only ship.
The news was revealed by Tom McAlpin, Virgin Voyages’ President and CEO, alongside Branson himself at the ship’s keel-laying ceremony. The ceremony marks the next milestone in Virgin Voyages journey, and took place in Fincantieri shipyard in Italy.
The decision to make the first ship an adult-only ship has been taken after consulting travel professionals and ‘future sailors’. ‘Sailors’ is the term Virgin Voyages will use to describe its passengers, and the three ship fleet will be known as the ‘Lady Ships’, which the line has said is a nod to British heritage.
Tom McAlpin said: “Virgin Voyages is creating a sophisticated ship and a transformational experience that offers our sailors a place where rejuvenating day-life meets exciting nightlife and everything in between.”
Adorned on the hull of the Virgin Voyages ship will be a ‘beautiful mermaid guide.’ Inspired by the traditional bows from ships of yore, she will be the ‘soul of the voyage.’ Designed with the glitter and glam of a yacht, the ship’s livery stands out on the high seas. She glides with a unique level of sophistication paired with an unapologetic aire of mystery. A design meant to excite and inspire sailors to want to explore every corner.
Virgin Voyages has also stated its commitment to creating the cleanest fleet of ships, as they believe ocean preservation is a paramount concern. Their goal is to create a ship that ‘leaves nothing behind except great memories.’ Virgin Voyages have signed an agreement with Scanship in which together they will explore the development of potentially game-changing technology that will potentially one day turn waste into energy.
