“Princess Cruises celebrated the 1st Sail away on board the sky Princess which I was lucky to be invited as a guest to experience life on board its inaugural cruise Trieste to Athens which was such an honour.
It introduced the Medallion class ship which is a small device that you can wear. This is a high tech system which makes life so much easier onboard, you can use it to order food and drinks anywhere on the ship. It is a keyless system onboard, so the Medallion knows when you’re outside your cabin and opens the door for you, making it much easier if you are carrying a lot of things and can’t find your key! You can also check in and book any shore excursions yourself through the app, it lets you connect with friends and family onboard, so if you lose each other or want to do different things during the day, you can easily find your way back to each other, or open up a chat to make plans, is a truly wonderful device.
My first impression of the ship was amazing, with its huge Atrium, home to all day entertainment, the international café if you fancy a quick bite to eat or some cake and coffee! There are 2 main pools on the top deck with numerous jacuzzi’s where you can sit and watch a movie on the big screen or even live sport, this was a great thing to do whilst relaxing in the hot tub and watching the world go by. They have also introduced some sunken booths onto top deck, with huge round couches you can get your group together and all sit around with your favourite drink and relax in the sunshine!
The sail away was brilliant with live bands and singers who we would see again later on in the cruise performing in the theatre. It was a great introduction to what we were in store for! All the staff onboard were truly wonderful, nothing was too much trouble for them, which I think really makes a holiday.
As well as everything going on at top deck, they have The Sanctuary, which we were lucky enough to have a look around. With private cabanas and plenty of sun loungers this is the place you want to be on a sea day. It was tranquil and the view out to sea is incredible, with floor to ceiling glass windows the view really does go on forever.
There are so many places to eat onboard it is hard to choose what you want! If you are looking for a daytime snack or a bite to eat at lunch you have the option of Pizza and the Salty Dog Grill where you can choose from Hot Dogs, Burgers and Fries. We all had a mixture on the first day and the main hit was the gluten free pizza onboard which the pizza chef made from scratch especially for us! If you are looking for more options then the World Fresh Marketplace is the perfect place for you, they have so many options from Mexican food to freshly cooked chicken to my favourite place, the pastry shop…filled with freshly baked cookies and cakes!
This is all before we have even started on the speciality restaurants! We had the pleasure of dining at one of the speciality restaurants whilst onboard, The Crown Grill, and even though it was a set menu it really didn’t disappoint! I have eaten at The Crown Grill before, I have said it in the past and I will say it again, it was the best meal I have ever eaten. My favourite thing about this restaurant is obviously the steak, with perfectly paired flavoured salts this will definitely get your taste buds going! If you’re going to go for a full 5 course meal I would definitely recommend the lobster bisque and the creamed spinach and potatoes with your steak go down a treat.
Entertainment onboard is incredible, where ever you go on the ship there is always something going on, from Karaoke to kick the night off or sit back and enjoy a full west end production show after dinner, you will not be disappointed! The shows that they have onboard Sky Princess are like nothing I have seen before, we were fortunate enough to see Rock Opera which was probably one of the best shows I have seen onboard a ship. I was sceptical at first as I like to watch a show with more of a storyline and a background to it but this show exceeded all my expectations!
If you are thinking of going onboard Sky Princess in the future then all I can say is go for it! It was a truly amazing experience that I will never forget…”
