Saga Cruises Cuts Steel For Spirit Of Discovery

Tuesday 6th March 2018, 12:14pm

Saga Cruises have officially started construction of Spirit of Discovery, after the traditional steel cutting ceremony took place in Papenburg, Germany at the Meyer Werft shipyard.

Spirit of Discovery is set to be the first new-build ship for the Saga fleet, so this was a momentous occasion for the cruise line, and the ship is set to launch next year.

Lance Batchelor, CEO of Saga Group said: “Today is an incredibly important day for us. Four years ago, we decided we were going to build our own purpose-built ships. We spent about two and a half years doing design, but it’s mostly been in a computer. Today is the day we go from being in a computer to cutting steel, and a real ship starts to appear in front of us.”

As with all Saga ships, Spirit of Discovery will be all inclusive, and will debut in July of next year, with the ability to carry 999 passengers. Spirit of Discovery will be closely followed by the line’s second new-build ship, Spirit of Adventure which is set to debut in August 2020.
