Your arrival by ship is fortuitous, as Mahon is most striking when approached by sea, perched atop a cliff overlooking the natural harbor. As the key to many ancient routes, Port-Vendres has been welcoming travellers for hundreds of years. The tradition goes back to when the Romans named it Portus Veneris after Venus, the goddess of love, and her temple offered good fortune to mariners.

France’s largest and most important fishing port on the Mediterranean, Sete also attracts pleasure craft, and some of the country’s America’s Cup entrants. The low town is criss-crossed by scenic canals and bridges, and you can observe the activity of the fishing fleet as it ties up in the center of town. Clams, mussels, and oysters are farmed, and it is hardly possible to find fresher fruits of the sea, a treat much enjoyed by visitors. Excursions can be made from Sete to Carcassonne, a perfectly preserved medieval city. With a double row of ramparts and 52 towers, it is everything you expect from a fairy tale castle.

At the same time bustling and picturesque, this oldest of the great French cities has progressed with the times, modernizing constantly. If it looks familiar that might be because it has played a role in many films, French and international, in fact just off the coast looms the foreboding Chateau d’If, where the fictional Count of Monte Cristo was imprisoned. Or perhaps you recognize scenes from paintings; the small port of l’Estaque was once a favorite haunt of artists such as Renoir, Cezanne, and Braque. In addition to a lengthy history, today Marseilles is well known in France for its hip-hop music. Who knew?

Cap your stay with a stroll along the palm-lined harbor, where you’ll find rows of old Provençal wooden fishing boats, pointus, and if you’re lucky, some local fishermen selling the day’s catch. Or simply taste the freshest seafood in any number of Sanary restaurants and enjoy watching the bustle of everyday life in this charming and inviting town.

Saint-Tropez conjures up images of sun-drenched beaches, tanned bodies, and jet setters enjoying martinis on the decks of luxury yachts. Indeed it is a glamorous playground for the wealthy, but anyone can spend an afternoon at a sidewalk café, watching the spectacle unfold. The south of France played a role in the history of modern painting, its clear light inspiring artists, so that even today many live and work here. For mesmerizing views, head up to the 16th century Citadel. Or stroll the old town, overflowing with restaurants, trendy boutiques, and galleries.
